The Bush administration's War in Iraq is a horrendous disaster. It was based on falsified intelligence, dubious economic considerations, greed, and hubris. The results of the war have destabilized the region, hurt America's standing in the international community, cost the lives of over 3,000 US troops and tens of thousands of Iraqis, and wounded countless others.

We believe this war must come to an end as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Republicans have blocked efforts in Congress to begin withdrawing troops, and Bush has threatened to veto any bill that includes plans for withdrawal. This is why we need a greater number of progressive Democrats in Congress, enough to override a Presidential veto that is so far out of line with the American public's beliefs.

Like our other DAPAC-endorsed representatives, Joe Courtney (CT 02) has repeatedly voted against funding the war in Iraq with no strings attached. Contrary to what critics argue, Courtney is also a strong supporter of America's troops.

In fact, over the 2007 Memorial Day weekend Courtney visited Iraq to be with the troops. He expressed dismay and sorrow over how dangerous Iraq has become under Bush's command, and how soldiers are being pushed to their limits with extended tours of duty.

In addition to supporting the troops in Iraq, Courtney has been a key supporter of a Congressional investigation into the body armor being used by U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Courtney wants the Congressional probe to include testing and comparisons between Army-issued armor and commercially available products.

Joe Courtney is a shining example of what it means to oppose Bush's Iraq War, yet still support U.S. troops. He is working to obtain better protection for the troops while getting them out of harm's way sooner. DAPAC is proud to support individuals who take such a brave stance.
