Americans were again reminded of our nation's dangerous gun control laws when a young man murdered 32 people at Virginia Tech in April, 2007.

No justification exists for the private use or legality of assault weapons. While recognizing the Second Amendment, we know that there must be sensible gun control reforms that can keep Americans safe and keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Gun licensing and registration are essential across the board, any time a firearm is sold, including at gun shows. This is the only way to prevent the illegal transfer to felons and minors.

Laws have given special protection to the gun industry for too long, granting immunity from federal consumer safety regulations. This flagrant attempt to shield one powerful industry from common rules removes any incentive for the manufacturers and sellers to ensure guns are controlled and kept out of the wrong hands. This issue underscores the need to elect House members who refuse to cozy up to the gun lobby, but instead will stand solidly behind the safety of all Americans.
