Steve Young is running in a district in Orange County, California, which was once a Republican stronghold. Democrats are picking up a former Republican-held district in southern California almost every presidential election cycle. Remember, during recessions, southern California is historically a place where rapid shifts in voter preference take place. Steve has an opportunity because of rapidly increasing Democratic registrations due to the economic free-fall that is occurring in Orange County. The county is at the center of the real estate bust because of the jobs lost by mortgage and real estate related businesses failing in the county.
Steve supports DAPAC'S progressive values such as a woman's right to choose, universal health care, an end to the Iraq War, environmental protections and, developing living wage jobs for Americans. His opponent, John Campbell, has voted to restrict women's right to choose, to continue war in Iraq, is for the Patriot Act, and against sex education in schools. He votes with Bush over 95% of the time.
Steve supports the Safe Climate Act and believes that both our nation's prosperity and security are tied to energy independence and protecting the environment. He understands that an economic plan must address research and education needs as well as fair trade laws. Also, Steve has developed a plan to address the lack of affordable housing, the need for improving infrastructure, and developing our workforce through education programs.
Steve will ensure that our armed forces receive the support and benefits that are promised for their service to our country. All of our armed service personnel, active duty and National Guard/Reservists, should be able to receive affordable health care, education, and job training for the service they and their families have been called to provide.
Steve will fight to ensure that our federal government follows the law in ensuring national security and will promote legislation that will limit warrant-less spying on law-abiding citizens. As an attorney in Orange County for over 26 years, he understands how the law should be enforced at all levels of government. Steve has run for this seat since the special election in 2005 and increased his percentage by ten points in the last election.
The district is within Orange County, south of Los Angeles, and includes the cities of Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, and parts of Newport Beach, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Garden Grove, and San Juan Capistrano.
The incumbent, Republican John Campbell, voted against the Emergency Extension Unemployment Act of 2008. This action supported the Bush administration's position but did nothing to help his district's constituents since unemployment has been steadily increasing in the district. Currently unemployment is up 30% from a year ago. GovTrack has rated Campbell as a far-right Republican based on his voting record. He has opposed SCHIP and rubber-stamped the Bush administration on anti-abortion funding, the Iraq War, the Patriot Act, stem cell research, sex-education in the schools, and capital gains taxes. As further example of his conservation attitudes, he is a member of the Republican Study Committee, which is also called the Caucus of House Conservatives.
We need to rid the country of John Campbell and reduce the infestation of Republican right-wing fanatics in government. It is time to elect new forward-thinking people like Steve Young to rebuild a free US society, the US economy, and lead us away from hatred, discrimination, and repression. |
