In New Mexico's 1st Congressional district, Martin Heinrich will also be facing tough primary competition from more conservative Democrats. With your support and our tactics, he should be able to win the primary and eventually win the vacated Congressional seat in November. The current Republican incumbent, Heather Wilson, has decided to run for the Senate leaving behind one of the toughest battleground districts from the 2006 election cycle. In 2006, Wilson maintained her seat with only 861 votes, or less than 0.4% of the vote.
Heinrich is a truly progressive candidate, supporting all of the issues we at DAPAC champion, while his Democratic opponents for the primary are not. Martin is 100% pro-choice, supports same-sex civil unions, wants to take immediate steps to end the war in Iraq, supports publicly funded, single payer, universal healthcare, strong environmental protection, a moratorium on the death penalty, and many others. He has pledged to vote for these crucial issues once in Congress. DAPAC is proud to add him as a newly endorsed candidate.
Martin Heinrich has committed his life to helping people. In his professional life, Martin has dedicated himself to the public good. As a small businessman he founded his own public affairs consulting firm serving not-for-profit and education clients. Martin served as Executive Director of the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing youth with science and environmental education experiences through wilderness expeditions.
Martin is a natural leader who has been active in his community and across New Mexico. He was appointed by Governor Bill Richardson to be Natural Resources Trustee for the State of New Mexico. As trustee, Martin worked with the Governor to clean up contaminated land and protect our natural environment. Martin has been active in land use, planning and conservation policy, holding board positions with Albuquerque's Open Space Advisory Board, the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance and the Southeast Heights Neighborhood Association.
Martin served on the Albuquerque City Council for four years, including a term as City Council President. During his time on the Council, Martin spearheaded measures aimed at cracking down on crime, raising the minimum wage, creating jobs, and making New Mexico a leader in energy efficiency and alternative energy like wind and solar power.
Please help support Martin Heinrich in his campaign by sending a donation made payable to “Martin Heinrich for Congress,” to us at DAPAC where we can forward it along to him.
